Hair Transplant

It is a surgical technique that involves extraction of hair follicles from the donor site and placement on the recipient site (which is the bald area) done under a local anesthetic.

A mega-session completes the entire procedure – harvest of hair follicles from the donor site at the back of the patient’s scalp and placement of the harvested follicles in the recipient site on the scalp- in a single session lasting several hours. Multiple sessions may be a better choice for some patients, based on patient’s comfort level, factoring in medical conditions as well.

Hair transplantation means, transplanting live hair roots onto the bald area. These transplanted hair roots behave in the same manner as the hair from the area where they are extracted. These transplanted hairs after growth can be cut or trimmed regularly. These can be shampooed or dyed if required. These hairs don’t require any medicines to maintain the growth as it occurs naturally and permanently. Even after complete shaving or tonsuring, these hairs will grow back and tend to do so for the rest of the life.

Hair transplant Methods

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) Hair Transplant:

Most Common hair transplantation procedure is follicular hair transplant which is also known as strip methodin hair transplantation. Hair restoration surgery is one of the common surgeries performed so widely in Delhi. In FUT Method of Hair Transplantation, Hair bearing strip is surgically removed from the back of the scalp. Hair Follicles are dissected; Hair follicles are prepared and put in Cold solution of Ringer lactate to maintain their viability and increase hair growth until the hair follicles are transplanted.

During Hair Transplantation small holes and sites are prepared at bald area to implant hair follicles. Holes and Sites are created in such a way that the hair grows normal like natural hairs. Donor area: Hair strip from back of scalp is called donor area. Reducing scar to minimum visible state is one of the key factors in successful hair transplant. Before Starting, Hair transplantation area is marked for the requirement of hair grafts and based on that possible numbers of grafts are taken out.

Another milestone method in the field of hair restoration surgery is Follicular Unit Extraction. With huge success for Follicular Hair Transplant FUE method followed.

Follicular unit Extraction:

Most common Hair Transplantation that is carried out in large scale is FUE hair Transplantation. In FUE Hair Transplant with the help of machine or device Hole is created around follicular unit and whole follicular unit is taken out and implanted in recipient area creating slit or hole. This method for hair restoration surgery is directly advantage over FUT method for Hair Restoration, because it is Scar Less. It has some limitation also. We will discuss regarding them later. FUE method leaves hole after follicular unit is taken out making it dead hence density of hairs from donor decreases.

Which to choose- FUE or FUT?

  • FUE results into very tiny scars, it is ideal for patients who want to keep very short hair length. It is also beneficial for those who need to perform several strenuous activities like professional bodybuilders who need to resume training very soon after the treatment.
  • FUE is also fit for those who cannot heal soon from the traditional strip harvesting or whose scalp is very tight. In FUE, surgeons can significantly extract air from other body parts in addition of scalp for example bread, underarms and chest. However there are various limitations with this procedure.

Few patients prefer FUE as it is a non-invasive procedure unlike to FUT. However in reality surgery is involved in both types of procedure and the incision depth is also same. The difference only lies in the incisions created. FUE procedure involves making several tiny incisions on the donor region whilst in FUT only single incision is perform that creates a lengthy scar in the mid of the donor region.

FUE is selected if there is need of making several round incisions and not just because of being a non-invasive procedure.
